Why We Invested in JB Air

Air pollution in India is often thought of as a Delhi problem, and a winter one, something that arrives with the smog in November and recedes when the season turns. But this framing understates the issue: poor air quality is a year-round concern across much of the country.
Close to 99% of India's population breathes air that exceeds safe limits for fine particulate matter (PM2.5). The cities affected extend well beyond the capital, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and a long list of tier-2 cities. Indoor air, where people spend the majority of their time, is often poorer than the air outside.
The need for clean indoor air is no longer a niche concern - it is becoming a structural consumer category, much like water purifiers did a decade ago. As incomes rise and awareness improves, we believe air purifiers will become a standard appliance in Indian homes. The opportunity lies in reimagining the product for India: higher performance, thoughtful design, and prices that make adoption possible at scale. Β
JB Air is building exactly that, and we believe it is uniquely positioned to define this category for the next generation of Indian consumers.
The Air Purifier Category
The air purifier category in India is growing rapidly, but penetration remains at an early stage. The constraint is no longer awareness - it is the product and the economics.
Today's market is polarized. At one end are premium, well-engineered products priced beyond the reach of most Indian households. At the other are lower-cost alternatives that often compromise on performance and quality. The result is a large gap in the market: a high-performance product designed specifically for India at an accessible price point.
The economics extend beyond the upfront purchase. Replacement filters, which typically cost βΉ2,000β5,000 and need to be changed every six months, significantly increase the total cost of ownership. For many consumers, this recurring expense is enough to delay or avoid the purchase altogether.
Despite these challenges, demand continues to strengthen. The category is growing at roughly 16% annually and is expected to approach βΉ2,000 crore by 2030. Urban household penetration has recently crossed 5%, marking the beginning of the shift from a discretionary appliance to an everyday necessity. We believe the next phase of growth will be driven by products that combine high performance, thoughtful design, and affordability.
That is what drew us to JB Air. The opportunity wasn't simply to build another air purifier - it was to build the product and the brand that can make clean air accessible to millions of Indian households.
JB's Approach
JB is building a consumer-electronics brand for Indian homes, starting by addressing air pollution with an affordable, well-specified air purifier. Β
Its first products are a range of purifiers, the JB 400 for bedrooms and studies, the JB 800 for living rooms, and the JB Lite at the entry point of the range, priced between roughly βΉ4,990 and βΉ9,990. The approach shows up in three areas.
1. A product designed in-house
Rather than rebadging an existing design, JB has developed its own machines. They use BLDC motors (42W in the 400 and 65W in the 800), a multi-stage HEPA 13, activated-carbon and pre-filter system that captures 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns, a larger filter surface area than many comparable units, a laser PM2.5 sensor, an OLED display, app control, and a low-noise sleep mode. It brings a room from an AQI of 250+ down to around 15 in about twenty minutes.
2. A lower cost of ownership
JB is priced in line with, or below, mainstream alternatives while matching or exceeding them on specification. The more significant difference is in running costs: JB's replacement filters start at around βΉ449, against the βΉ2,000β5,000 typical of the category, which materially lowers the long-term cost of owning a purifier. Fairly priced filters support customer trust and repeat purchase, while still providing a recurring revenue stream for the business.
3. Distribution as a core capability
Distribution is built into JB's plan rather than treated as an afterthought. The company is omni-channel by design: an offline-affiliate network of creators, branded live-AQI widgets within the news and weather apps people already use, quick-commerce and marketplaces, modern trade, mall and apartment pop-ups, and a B2B motion across hospitality, schools, clinics, and airports. In its soft launch, the product has sold largely through word of mouth, at minimal customer-acquisition cost, while the brand has remained in stealth.
Team
JB Air is founded by entrepreneurs who experienced the problem firsthand and were frustrated by the lack of compelling products in the market. Rather than accepting the trade-off between expensive premium brands and underperforming low-cost alternatives, they set out to build a product designed specifically for Indian households.
Shiv previously founded Kaching and spent over a decade building consumer businesses, with deep experience across offline commerce, affiliate models, and brand distribution. Β
Sivapriyan co-founded Award Speakers and grew up running his family's speaker manufacturing business, bringing extensive expertise in hardware development, manufacturing, and consumer retail operations.
Together, they bring a complementary skill set across the two critical pillars of the business: building world-class hardware and scaling consumer distribution. Β
Their combination of domain expertise, operational experience, and conviction in the problem made them uniquely positioned to build a category-defining company.
Why Now?
Demand for clean air in India is driven by the air itself rather than by broader market cycles, and the underlying conditions have been worsening across more cities and more of the year. Β
The category is growing at a strong pace, and adoption is likely to broaden as products become more affordable and as usage spreads beyond the north and beyond the winter season. Β
At the same time, customer expectations have shifted: buyers increasingly look for products that are better, more affordable, and more reliable, rather than paying a premium on principle. JB is well positioned for this, a well-engineered product at an accessible price, built by a team with experience on both the hardware and distribution sides.
As the air purifier moves from an occasional purchase toward a more routine part of the Indian home, we are pleased to back the JB team.
Shiv Ganesh, Founder, JB Air, said: "Clean air should not be limited to one season or one city. We built JB from the ground up to be a well-engineered, fairly priced purifier suited to Indian homes, and we are glad to partner with Kalaari as we move from stealth to scale."
Harshit Kumar, AVP, Kalaari Capital, said: "India has one of the largest air purifier opportunities in the world, driven by a structural need but still at a very early stage of adoption. JB is building the right product for this market - combining world-class engineering with accessibility for Indian households. Shiv and Sivapriyan bring the complementary expertise needed to build both exceptional hardware and a scaled consumer brand, and we are excited to partner with them on this journey."
