Zero Hour Conversation with Roma Datta Chobey
We’re excited to share that our portfolio company, Digantara, has raised a $50 million Series B round.

We congratulate Anirudh, Tanveer and Rahul and the entire Digantara team on this incredible milestone. Since our seed investment in 2021, the team has demonstrated deep commitment to their core mission – making space more accessible and building a comprehensive space situational awareness & surveillance platform.

Consumer AI adoption in India is moving faster than almost anyone in the ecosystem predicted, including the platforms building for it. The gap is between how fast consumers are adapting and how fast startups, brands, and even the ecosystem itself are keeping up.

This shift is especially visible in commerce, where AI is beginning to close the gap between discovery and purchase, and in Tier 2/3 India, where digital comfort is finally converting into transactions at scale.

We had the privilege of hosting Roma Datta Chobey for a Zero Hour Conversation. She is Managing Director – Connected Consumer & Commerce at Google India, and has spent over 25 years across technology, telecom, media, and digital businesses, including serving as interim Country Manager for India. Her recent work has focused on how AI is reshaping the way Indian consumers discover, engage, and transact.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘂𝘀:

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 - AI adoption in India is outpacing even advanced markets in usage intensity, and much of it is happening quietly, without the fanfare around funding or infrastructure.

𝗕𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 - Online shoppers from Tier 2/3 cities have grown from roughly 45% to 62% of the market since 2019.

𝗔𝗜 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 - Consumers no longer have to choose between a fast decision and a well-researched one, which is changing how brands need to show up in discovery.

𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 - Full end-to-end agent-led transactions are still early, but category by category, the grunt work of comparison and tracking is already being handed off.

𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 - As AI expands what consumers can research and compare, local creators and voices are increasingly what convert consideration into confidence.

𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲/𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮 - not in the way it has in China and Southeast Asia, but that dynamic is starting to shift now, driven by the same AI-led changes.

𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝟮𝟱 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 - with roughly 1 in 5 carrying commercial intent, and usage is now showing up even in Tier 2 markets as Lens and Gemini make visual search easier.

These aren't just consumer trends; they're structural shifts in how the next generation of commerce and content companies in India will need to be built.

#LifeAtKalaari is all about continuous learning, and this session reflected that spirit.
