Today, an average smartphone which an Indian user has costs around $200. While the features that these smartphones pack are more than optimal for day-to-day use, these phones typically are not able to process high graphic games, making gamers spend more to get high end devices. Have you ever experienced lag while playing your favourite Call of Duty game? Or were you fully able to enjoy a mission in GTA V because your PC wasn’t good enough?
This will change. Imagine, what if entry level smartphones and PCs are able to process high graphic powerful games seamlessly? This is possible with Cloud Gaming!
But, what is Cloud Gaming?
With cloud gaming, one does not need hardware (discs, downloads, even consoles) to play their favourite games. A user can stream games across the internet just like they can stream shows online. With this technology, we use cloud servers (datacentres that may be miles away) instead of local hardware devices to run games. Cloud gaming will remove a lot of up-front cost in buying a high-end powerful device. Basically, high end gaming will no longer require one to spend a fortune on high end devices, but will only require a good quality internet connection and a simple screen device!
Users will pay a small monthly or annual fee to stream these games (just like we do with Netflix and other OTT platforms). This subscription will enable users to have access to a high performing remote device and they can play any game of their choice. Additionally, the data is stored in the cloud – giving instant access to all your favourite games on any device that is connected to the Internet.
Cloud Gaming is not a new concept, but has faced a lot of challenges and hence is still at a nascent stage. It is already being tested in Japan, Europe and the US with giants like Google coming out with Stadia, Microsoft with xCloud and Nvidia with GEForce Now supporting all kinds of devices like PC, console and mobile phones.
Cloud gaming has democratized access for low-end devices, enabling more users to play hardcore games on entry level smartphones, PCs and thus expanding the user base along with creating a large monetization opportunity globally.
